The ConocoPhillips Science Experience

The ConocoPhillips Science Experience is a three or four day experience full of hands-on science in universities and tertiary institutions for Year 9 and 10 students. Looking for information about applying for TSE as a student?. We do not provide information for attendees on this website.

The Young Scientists of Australia provide volunteering staff who help conduct the experience throughout NSW, and the rest of Australia. For YSA members who want to volunteer, read on.

The ConocoPhillips Science Experience (formally The Science Experience) is YSA’s largest annual volunteering event. The event is a 3 day experience of science at some of the finest universities around Australia for high school students in years 9 and 10.

The program is organised by the university, and YSA recruits its members to provide the staffing and supervision for the three days of the experience.

The Science Experience Staffing Exchange

YSA help staff TCSEs all over Australia, though our sister chapters in Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. This means we can offer more experienced YSA members the opportunity to travel interstate and staff TCSE at the same time. For more information, read below.

What is TCSE Exchange?

Every January TCSE Season, YSA Sydney members have the chance to staff TCSE at other YSA Chapters around Australia.

This is an exciting program that allows you to travel interstate and gain some valuable experience, develop brand new skills, meet new friends, and have an absolute blast! TCSE runs differently in every Chapter and it is always a valuable opportunity to find out for yourself just how diverse it can be.

Where and When is TCSE Exchange happening?

You can choose to undertake TCSE Exchange either Melbourne, Adelaide or Brisbane.
No interstate TCSE runs at the same time as Sydney TCSE – most are the week after. Having said that, TCSE dates are constantly changing so many opportunities throughout the year arise.

You will also need to attend the training sessions held by each respective Chapter.

Since it is not always possible to staff Sydney TCE and go on TCSE Exchange because of the way they overlap, you must think carefully about which one you’d like to do most.

Are there any costs?

Yes, there are some costs involved with attending TCSE Exchange, so please keep this in mind! Each interstate Chapter has different expenses. For further information, get in contact with us when you send in your application.

Who can go on TCSE Exchange?

You need to preferably be at least 17 years old with at least 2 TCSEs worth of experience as a group staffie.  This may be relaxed depending on the overall experience of the candidate at the discretion of the chapter of destination.

How are the final candidates selected?

The YSA Sydney team processes all the applications that we receive, and then we come down to a shortlist of applicants. We send this shortlist to the other YSA Chapters, where they review the information and decide who to accept. Additionally, some other chapters may require you to sign up through their registration processes, so please check with us whether that is the case too.

Positions Available
The position of Senior Staffie are for volunteers who are looking for extra responsibilities during the program and have had extensive experience in science volunteering or science communication. The position of Group Staffie are for anyone interested and enthusiastic – there is no minimum experience! Because there is a high number of candidates in January, we have introduced a Rotational Group Staffie position to solve the problem where you need experience to get experience.  You will get a one-day taste of staffing plus full training and of course you are welcome to attend all the daily socials.  Last but not least is the position of Winged Monkey. This is a highly flexible position that will be offered if sufficient applications are received. Duties include helping execute YSA communication activities such as the relay quiz, science show, mystery activity etc., assisting coordinators and even tagging along with groups.  This position gives a taste of all elements of staffing without the responsibility of a coordinating position.

Dates : 11 January 2017 to 13 January 2017

To be considered for a staffie position you must be available for compulsory training.

There is no minimum experience – anyone can apply!

NB: our January program tends to attract a large number of applicants (unlike our other volunteering events where we generally accept all applicants).  Apologies in advance if we are unable to accept you or you do not receive your first preference of position due to a large volume of applicants.  Previous YSA volunteering experience will be looked upon favorably in the selection process.
