What made you want to join YSA? One of my best friends at high school spent a good few years convincing me to join YSA after I attended one of USyd’s science schools. I’ve always loved science, and ended up joining once I finished high school as I’d heard so many good stories and wanted to meet like-minded people.

What’s your favourite science and why? Mathematics! Because it’s always fun solving problems, and it’s the core of basically every other discipline 

What’s your favourite hobby aside from volunteering for YSA events? Learning languages!


Maegan Chan

What made you want to join YSA? I joined YSA after watching a science show at UNSW, and wanted the confidence to one day be able to present in a room full of strangers. 

What’s your favourite science and why? Chemistry, because the reactions that we observe are interesting, and I like fire.

What’s your favourite hobby aside from volunteering for YSA events? Binging TV shows and baking.


Lucy Tan

What made you want to join YSA? Being able to immerse myself in science through the various programs YSA had offered me. The people I have met along the way are all amazing people who constantly encourages me to strive to do better and have fun.

What’s your favourite science and why? Human Anatomy and physiology and health sciences. Learning the nitty gritty behind why and ow things happen in our body. It just amazes me so much every time I learn a new part of the body I had never thought about and its functions, or learning about diseases and studying how it affects the body and what can alleviate it. It’s just such an amazing part of science that words cannot explain how much I love it.

What is your favourite hobby aside from volunteering for YSA events? Ice skating. I haven’t been doing it recently but I love it. Hiking, swimming and watching K-dramas or reading mangas hehehe

What made you want to join YSA? I joined YSA because of the many science outreach, volunteering and networking opportunities it gave to its members.

What’s your favourite science? My favourite science is either Chemistry / Biochemistry.

What’s your favourite hobby aside from volunteering for YSA events? Reading and/or watching TV shows.

What made you want to join YSA? YSA is an amazing platform to engage young people in science outreach. I joined the team to co-ordinate and run workshops, science shows and schools.

What’s your favourite science and why Chemistry because it explains how other sciences work, from how a cell functions to why you can’t unburn your toast!

What’s your favourite hobby aside from volunteering for YSA events? I enjoy playing tennis and bushwalking.


Koy Silachan

What made you want to join YSA?
I joined YSA because I wanted to get involved in amazing volunteering opportunities, such as our annual TCSE, whilst also engaging with my passion for science. 

What’s your favourite science and why?
My favourite science is biology, as I get to study living organism, its structure and internal process. In particular, I like studying the structure of infectious diseases, and understanding its effects on an organism’s health.

What’s your favourite hobby aside from volunteering for YSA events? In my spare time, I like being outdoors. Whether playing a team sport or going on a hike, I like to find time being active with my friends.


Michelle Ding

What made you want to join YSA Consistently having a long term passion for science, I found YSA as a medium to spread my love for the discipline to the youth of Australia. Joining YSA made me realise the importance of science communication whilst making some long term friends 🙂

What’s your favourite science and why? ASTROPHYSICS!!!! How can you not be immediately attracted to the beauty and mystery of the universe and the terrors of the unknown? It is a form of exploration beyond what we can reach and it is amazing that objects billions of light years away can still be detected and researched.

What’s your favourite hobby aside from volunteering for YSA events? Having sung and danced since I was 3, composition and the immersive experience of songs is a major medium for me to expressed my feelings and escape momentarily from reality. But additionally, I am also a professional K-drama enthusiast 😉 😉

What made you want to join YSA?
I joined YSA because it is a great opportunity to make new friendships, gain volunteering experience and explore the various branches of science. YSA has taught me many skills and actively help me pursue my passion for science. I really enjoy participating in different science workshops, volunteering and socials that YSA runs yearly.

What’s your favourite science and why? My favourite science would probably be Mathematics. I like to think creatively to apply different methods and solutions to a problem. Most of what I’ve learnt in Maths clicks in my head. Mathematics also creates beautiful patterns and graphs that reveal nice fundamentals of nature and the Universe.

What’s your favourite hobby aside from volunteering for YSA events? My hobbies include painting, drawing and Netflix. I also love museums and food in the city (but that’s not going to happen anytime soon).

What made you want to join YSA? I joined YSA because I wanted to meet new people and gain more experience in volunteering and presenting.

What’s your favourite science and why? Favourite science is psychology because it has so many approaches which explore both the physiological aspect as well as the social aspect of how our minds work.

Shabrina Yusri

What made you want to join YSA? I was attracted to the energy of YSA members and how fun they were. I also enjoyed going to YSA socials, and actually started attending those before volunteering.

What’s your favourite science and why? I am a big fan of Biology, especially Human Anatomy. It’s just really fascinating to me! My very close second is Physics, because the amount of maths is <3

What’s your favourite hobby aside from volunteering for YSA events? I do taekwondo, and that takes up majority of my time outside of YSA and uni. I also like to bake/cook fancy breakfasts!
