AGM over-run
Written by Tyson Murcott

Greetings fellow YSA members,

A brief update on the course of events to keep you all in the know. The first AGM took place on April 7 at the DNA tower in Kings Park. The two main points of interest to emerge from this meeting were the election of a committee and news of an upcoming science fair.

The committee elected is as follows;

President: Leon Smith
Vice President: Adrian Dudek
Treasurer: Cherie Tan
Secretary: Tyson Murcott
Assistant Secretary: Ciara Farris

These members will coordinate the running of affairs and keep everything going smoothly. As time goes on, we will open up positions for other commitee positions, such as Socials Organiser, and such a such.

TRIPLE S: The Science for School Students fair or 'Triple S' is approaching. This is a free fair held twice a year at different high schools with various scientific demonstrations by all sorts of different organisations. You can find all the info at http://www.triples.org.au/. The first fair is on Tuesday May 13 at Swan Christian College, starts at 5:30 and runs through to 8:30. If you want to see a snapshot of everything scientific all at once then this is the perfect opportunity. Bring the whole family along as well.

Unfortunately we ourselves aren’t yet able to put on our own show at the fair due to technical reasons, but this may change in the future. For now let us enjoy it merely as a free public event. If you think this would be a great thing to go to then let us know and we can perhaps organise to meet somewhere at the fair. We do realise that it may be difficult to get to, given that it is out Guildford way. If this is the case, don’t fret. There is another Triple S fair held in September, this one being held at Newman College (Glendalough area).

We also discussed potential ideas for fundraising. A chocolate run would be a great way to raise some money. Any comments or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email some through. Other than that, there’s not much else to report. If there’s anything you think we should know about then sent us an email.

Cheers
Leon Smith, Tyson Murcott.

Young Scientists of Australia is a group of young people aged 14-26 who share a common interest in science, and how it relates to the wider world. Our motto is "Promoting Science to the Youth of Australia", which we achieve through a number of activities, including:
  • Staffing at science schools such as The Siemens Science Experience
  • Providing science and leadership training to all our members
  • Providing mentoring and advice to younger members
  • Organising regular social events in a drug, smoke and alcohol-free environment
  • Publishing a quarterly newsletter, full of activity reports, the latest news in science and range of funny science -quotes and jokes.

YSA works in partnership with a number of institutions, including universities, the Science Foundation for Physics and the Australia and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS).
