The Exec Committee 2011-12

What? You thought our wonderful little organization ran itself? No! The wonderfully devoted people you see below donate their own valuable time to make sure YSA Melbourne runs smooth as a lubricated penguin on a waterslide.
The following bios were published in Plasma just after the AGM, and as such if not read in that context may sound rather weird.

Top Four

President: Justin 'Bob' Sorbello

Greetings all! Justin 'Bob' Sorbello here, YSA Melbourne's president, and from planning and co-ordinating major events like murder mysteries or camps, to writing or recording interesting news stories for our members, I've helped out with almost everything YSA has to offer. This is my 7th year here, my 2nd as President, and I'm still excited as ever to be able to contribute to such a fantastic organisation. YSA has helped transform me from a shy high school student to an engineering Consultant working with robots. It is my desire to see YSA Melbourne become an important, respected body that empowers and fosters a new generation of scientific leaders to help make a better world.

Vice President: Amelia Wales

Hi, I'm Amelia, and I'm currently completing both a Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Arts at Monash University. This is my first year as Vice President, and I hope to use this time to manage and assist in projects that will both strengthen YSA and help us with our main goal - the promotion of science to the youth of Australia. In my free time, I enjoy a few creative projects like drawing and costume making, and am quite a fan of video games, science fiction and fantasy in any form, and comics.

Secretary: Lucy Caine

Hey guys! I'm Lucy and this year I'm YSA Melbourne's Secretary! This is my third year on exec, and I'm sure it's going to be just as much (if not more) hard work and shenanigans. My position is to make sure your exec keeps in contact with you, so it something's wrong with that - you're not getting emails, or want to change your email address - I'm the person you need to get in touch with. There's always loads of exciting things going on that people can get involved in, so if you see me around, I'm more than happy to talk to you about them (or, indeed, anything at all!). I'm looking forward to another brilliant YSA year!

Treasurer: James Cavallo

Salutations to all who are reading this, and further salutations to those who aren't. I am James, the wonderful YSA Treasurer. For those who don't know me, come bug me at a social and I'll give you a cookie to nom on. My role as Treasurer involves watering the YSA Money Tree to ensure it produces multiple harvests a year, and then distributing and using this money to improve the quality of our organisation. I also venture deep into the depths of legality dungeons and ensure all paperwork is filled out correctly. This is my second year as Treasurer and as such my aim shall be to reach one million dollars - give or take.

General Exec

Editor: Emily Beagley

Hi there guys! I am Emily Beagley, your new editor! After making my way into the exec like most, through MWOPship, I found the place that best suited me! I am in charge of producing this lovely little publication, Plasma, as well as managing every other publication for YSA Melbourne! So if you have any articles you want included, topics you want covered, or anything, come talk to me. I am currently in year 12, looking to study psychology next year. You are more than likely to see me at every social! I look forward to filling your inboxes with much Plasma-y goodness! Over and out, Emily.

Social Coordinator: Ricardo Cannizzaro

Hi everyone! I'm Ricardo, your third-time-running social co-ordinator! When I'm not devouring dumplings and calculating the Lagrangian for multi-modal system, I'm organising your socials! Whether it be ice skating, Scienceworks, trivia, or even Mind Body Science, you can bet that I'm always finding new ways to keep things fresh and exciting for both young and old, whilst providing you with a top quality social calendar! I'll be the one emailing you twice a month about all the upcoming fun and frivolity, and giving you the latest news in the YSA Melbourne Social Scene. As with previous years, expect more science content, more variety, and more involvement with the community. So I ask you to join me as we embark on a year-long journey filled with fantastical feats, fondues of friendship, and fabulous fun for all.
Yours in social splash, Ricardo Cannizzaro.

Science Liason: Matt de Bono

Hi all! Matt here, your science liason, ready to give you a year of fun-filled science. I love science, so I'm studying Science/Engineering at the University of Melbourne, and I'm always up for science discussion - anywhere from quantum mechanics to black holes! - so if you have a question, my inbox is always open. There's plenty to look out for this year in the Melbourne Science Scene including National Science Week, YSA science events, and I'll be bringing it all to your inbox - so let the science begin.

Webmaster: Maxy Lotherington

Hi there everyone, I'm Maxy, your newest Webmaster! I'm currently in year 11, drowing under IB coursework, but it's never enough to keep me away from my love of YSA and science - and, of course, my computer, which houses my beloved Photoshop and various coding programs. I'll be around here handling all your technical errors, and adding a little bit of designer spark to everything we have around here. If you have any questions, comments or statements about the website or anything, I'm your go-to girl!

MWOPS (Members without Portfolio):

Loughlin Turpin

Hey guys, I'm Locky! Hopefully you've seen me running around being really enthusiastic, either in real life or through the Facebook and Youtube acounts that I maintain. I love learning about how the world works at a fundamental level and I hope to inspire others by becoming a science communicator. I love chemistry and physics, and am always looking for new ways to share my passion for our universe with other people. My goal is to build my leadership skills, getting involved in socials, promotion, and TSE. I also hope to contribute to a portfolio of original scientific content, something that YSA can contribute to the entire world. If this is stuff that you're into, please see me and get involved!

Tessa Marshall

Hey guys, I'm Tessa! This is my second year as an MWOP, and I'm looking forward to being able to help out with my favourite organisation even more this year. I'm currently in year 10 and loving biology (although physics, not so much). I'm often at socials and if you see someone eating sushi for breakfast at Flinders Station, it's probably me. So if you see me around, don't be afraid to say hi!

Gen Lacey

Leeeeeroooooy Geeeennnkinssss! Hey YSAers, I'm Genevieve (aka Gen) and I'm one of the new MWOPs this year. I'm currently in year 11 at the John Monash Science School, and I love biology and physics (with a secret passion for economics!). I like YSA, you like YSA, so I think we should work together to spread the awesomeness of YSA to more people and increase membership, resulting in an overall increase of awesomeness, fun, and most importantly, science!

David Wisth

Hi everyone! I'm David, a newly elected MWOP and a fresh face on the committee. At the moment, I'm studying Engineering at the University of Melbourne and would like to be working towards a career involving robotics in the future - because who doesn't like robots? I would love to help YSA grow, especially in trying to spread the word about both YSA and other scientific events and competitions that people would find beneficial. Looking forward to a great year with YSA!

Camille Acuna

Hey everyone! I am Camille and I'm one of the new MWOPs for YSA Melbourne. I am currently in year 11 and when I finish high school, I hope to go into zoology! I generally like to get involved as much as possible inside and outside of school, which renders me pretty busy! Other than YSA, I play softball, hockey, and the trombone, which are all super mega fun and exciting! I am super pumped to be helping out more within YSA and I cannot wait! I try my best to go to most socials so if you see me around, come and say, 'Hey, what's going on?' I tend to make obscure references, so if you don't get what I'm going on about sometimes, it's not you, it's me. I hope to see you all around!
