The Charlene Heisler Prize
What: 1000 word essay competition
Topic: Describe a currently unanswered question or puzzle about the Universe, or some astronomical problem, and suggest and observation or experiment that might answer that question, or some way in which it might be solved in the future.
Prize: All-expenses-covered trip to the annual scientific meeting of the Astronomical Society of Australia; and an invitation to join a major astronomical research team to participate in observations using one of the telescopes in Australia.

Friday June 1st Applications closes for:
Biofutures 2001
Target audience: Years 11 and 12 students
When: 1 - 6 July 2000
Venue: The University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology
Cost: $175
In Brief: Biofutures 2001 is a biomedical engineering forum for senior secondary students from Queensland and Singaporean high schools. Over the course of five days and nights in July, participants will engage in excursions, workshops, debates and lectures, gaining exposure to the industry, a broad perspective of the issues facing modern bioscience, and hands-on experience with cutting-edge biomedical technology. Hosted jointly by The University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology, Biofutures 2001 will bring together eighty participants from all over Queensland and Singapore for the opportunity to experience university life, meet professionals in the field, and make new friends. The forum is wholly organised by students, for students.

What: There are 2 different lectures conducted in various venues: one titled "Photons, Fireflies and a Feeling for Colour", and the other is titled "Intelligent Polymers (Plastics with Attitude)"

"Photons, Fireflies and a Feeling for Colour"
Light and colour are integral parts of our life.  The lecture will look at the causes of colour and the chemistry behind it, including nature's use of colour and how we have used it in art and science.

"Intelligent Polymers (Plastics with Attitude)"
New intelligent plastic materials have many uses.  These include the electronic nose and artificial muscles as well as in fabrics that can be biomonitors in sports applications.

What: A 12-day, residential summer school on aspects of the Australian minerals industry (including environmental science), emphasising tertiary courses and career options related to science and engineering.
