The Charlene Heisler Prize
What: 1000 word essay competition
Topic: Describe a currently unanswered question or puzzle about the Universe, or some astronomical problem, and suggest and observation or experiment that might answer that question, or some way in which it might be solved in the future.
Prize: All-expenses-covered trip to the annual scientific meeting of the Astronomical Society of Australia; and an invitation to join a major astronomical research team to participate in observations using one of the telescopes in Australia.

Wednesday, 3rd The Sydney Science Forum -- The Science behind the hype: Cancer explained
Lecturer: Professor Richard I. Christopherson

In brief: How much do you know about the scientific basis of cancer and autoimmune disorders? Our immune systems are complex and intricate and made up of different types of white blood cells produced in the bone marrow and providing defences against infection and cancer. Professor Christopherson will explain the cancer related diseases and the recent problems and advancements in cancer research in his lecture during National Science Week 2000. Come along and learn the science behind the hype: exactly what cancer is and what has been achieved in our quest to understand it to date.

In brief: Do reef fish stay on one reef throughout the postsettlement phase of their lifecycle or do they move around from reef to reef? And if they do move, do you believe reef fish have the power to navigate where they move? These are some of the questions that Dr Kingsford will focus on during his talk. Join us for an interesting new insight into the myriad of choices faced by a young reef fish during its life.
